Scottsdale began as Orangedale, the 640-acre home of brothers Winfield and George Washington Scott. Many of the town’s first residents were recruited by the brothers from other parts of the county, and the area was renamed Scottsdale in their honor in 1894. Scottsdale remained a primarily agricultural community for several decades—the town has produced oranges, almonds, and cotton among its successful crops.
Today, Scottsdale covers just over 184 square acres and is home to a population of 217,385. It is bordered to the west by Phoenix, and to the north by the Tonto National Forest. Scottsdale has been ranked among America’s “Most Livable Cities” and is also known as a premier golfing destination.
